Flat Lick Falls Recreation area, in Jackson County, and the Daniel Boone National Forest. This is the home of the Kentucky Gravel Championship host by Boondoggle Bike Events.
This route uses a lot of that race course but is not exactly the course used. The majority of the ride is in the S-Tree Campground area of McKee or Sandgap. This area is highly used by ATV and Motorcycles. Most sections of the route are packed gravel that roll super fast and are always hard packed, but there is about 15% of this route that is made up of back country ATV trails that depending on weather could send you into 4-5ft deep mud holes, unless you are willing to find a new line around them. You will only ride about 10% on pavement for this route. Most gravel bikes with 33c or larger tires will be fine in dry conditions, if you visit following a large rainstorm you're screwed no matter what bicycle you have. There are lots of places to camp and no places to resupply. Once you leave the recreation area you will not pass any stores. There will be some water crossings that you could use to filter water, but there are no resupplies. You can leave the route and ride a few miles into the towns of Sandgap or McKee for gas station/convenience store amenities. Archives

War Daddy, Kentucky's Hardest Mountain Bike Race.
The crew at Trail Sick hosted the 1st Annual event in April of 2019. The race is 68 miles long consisting of 80% gravel fire road, 10% ATV paths, and 10% pavement (all rough estimates). Some devices recorded 8,000 ft of climbing while others recorded as much as 10,000 ft. The course runs through downtown Hyden, Kentucky and the beautiful Daniel Boone National Forest. There are only a couple of places to resupply along the route and the hours of the business are hard to nail down. It is best to carry all of the supplies you will need including water and food. There are no local bike shops and little to no cell coverage once you leave the town of Hyden. A minimum tire size of 42c is recommended and a 1.9-2" is definitely going to make things more comfortable on you. There a lot of residential areas along the route, so dogs may or may not be an issue depending on when you ride. Also, the route has sections that are highly trafficked by off road vehicles and horses so keep an eye open for other people along the route. The route begins and ends at the Leslie County RV Park which is an excellent spot to setup and make this an overnight route. There are also a few camping spots along the route as well as creeks and rivers. Big thanks to everyone at Trail Sick for putting this together and making it known to all of the cyclist in Kentucky Archives |
